| John and Matt are the Flops. Years ago, before Trip Shakespeare, the two of them played in Minneapolis band E. Brown, when the short-haired John thumped out a barrage of eighth notes on his bass, driven at manic tempos by the jungle drumming of long-haired Matt. As the Flops, their hair has become more lustrous, suiting not only their music but their status as stars of the new independent film The Last Word. These First Avenue shows were a good opportunity for me to hear some of their newest songs, “Help Me Fly Away,” “Winter Blue,” and “Alone.” |
