Carroll Valley, HFSkimo -- February 27
Our arrival in Carroll Valley, Pennsylvania was
complicated by the fact that we were looking for a ski resort in
a town with no visible snow. A closer look, however, revealed a
small strip of snow on an otherwise green hillside where skiers
and snowboarders were hitting speeds approaching twelve miles per
hour. Having arrived a day before the show, John and Jake drove
ten minutes up the road to Gettysburg. Armed with a self-guided
tour map from the Gettysburg tourist office, they visited various
points of interest and filled each otherin on important aspects
of the battle.
John: George Washington's men lined up right
about here.
Jake: What a sight! Napoleon must have been peeing in his
little knickers.
As for the show the next day, the stage stood at
the foot of the ski slope, and we rocked in 60 degree weather as
those with lift tickets slushed their way down the hill to the muddy
mess at the bottom where rock fans gathered to take in the show.
A good time was had by all and we were happy to run into many folks
we had met on our "Great Divide" tour.
New York City, Mercury Lounge -- March 4
John and Jake spent the morning searching for an
inexpensive electronic keyboard. What better place to do this than
the recently revamped Times Square, home to dozens of electronics
stores. They bounced from store to store haggling with salesman
for the mere opportunity to see and play the merchandise.
Jake: Could we hear that keyboard in the
window?
Salesman: You wanna buy it?
John: Well, we'd like to hear it first.
Salesman: Get the f@#& out of my store!
By the end of the morning, the exchanges had become
more efficient:
Jake: Could we hear that keyboard in the
window, or should we just get the f#@& out of your store?
That night, we played a fun-filled set for a sold-out
Mercury Lounge crowd dotted with familiar faces. The next morning
we got up and played with our new electronic keyboard ($49.99 marked
down from $79.99) before driving to the airport.
Toronto, Reverb Room -- March 6
Jake was very excited about unloading the Canadian
ten dollar bill he'd had in his wallet since 1996. Unfortunately,
he got change back from his ten and had to keep buying things he
didn't want to rid himself of foreign currency.
Dan and John spent the afternoon on Queen Street,
one of the coolest shopping districts in the metric world, where
Dan found himself a really cool black jacket.
Jake, Brad (Sound Man), Toby (Stage Tech), and Chris
(Road Manager) went to a really lame restaurant where they waited
an hour and a half for fish'n chips.
